Annette Jung of Talking Animals animation studio has done the impossible and perfectly captured the King of Pop’s dance moves in LEGO. She side-skirts the limited articulation of the minifigure by using a top-down perspective on some basic bricks. This method essentially turns LEGO bricks into pixels. It’s a great technique to keep in mind when looking for creative approaches to brick animation.
Watching this makes me thinks of two things:
- Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker for the Sega Genesis (the sprites in this animation are smaller, but more limber than those in the game).
- The “Fell in Love with a Girl” music video by Michel Gondry, one of the finest brick animations of all time. If you haven’t seen it, drop what you’re doing and watch it now. If you have seen it, go watch it again, because it’s just that good. Also, watch the making-of video.
